Scaffolding Guide

Tie or Tie Assembly

Ties are vital to the safety of a scaffold framework and must be checked on a regular basis. A final check of the ties is also required before dismantling.

Only an experienced or competent scaffolder should be allowed to remove ties, so long as they can ensure the stability of the scaffold framework is not jeopardised. If ties are to be removed for any reason then alternative ties must first be fixed to maintain the stability of the scaffold.

A scaffold framework must be stabilised so it cannot move towards or away from the structure. This is usually achieved using positive two-way ties to secure the scaffold framework to the building.

Ledger braces are used to connect the front standards to the rear standards. These are usually placed at each lift and at every other pair of standards.
As free access through the scaffold is often a requirement for other trades working on the site, some ledger braces may have to be removed. The scaffold design engineer will advise on which ledger braces need to be removed and wether additional braces or ties are required elsewhere. Braces form the integral part of the scaffold structure and must not be removed without proper authorisation.
